Blue Jays game cancelled due to hole in Rogers Centre roof

Monday night’s baseball game between the Toronto Blue Jays and Kansas City Royals was cancelled due to a hole in the Rogers Centre roof that was caused by ice falling from the CN Tower.

The CN Tower was also closed because of the ice, but it reopened on Tuesday.

Police blocked off the area directly under the CN Tower and the Rogers Centre due to the “relatively large” blocks of ice tumbling down onto the streets and sidewalks below.

“Fortunately there’s been no injuries reported,” said Const. Allyson Douglas-Cook.

The Jays issued an advisory saying fans with tickets to Monday’s game could exchange them for tickets to a number of different games scheduled to be played between April and September.

Sportsnet baseball columnist Shi Davidi tweeted a picture from inside the Rogers Centre showing the hole in the dome.

The team said crews were working to repair the hole and fans would be treated to a “traditional doubleheader” Tuesday afternoon.

“We apologize to our fans for this inconvenience,” the team said on Twitter.

The last time a Blue Jays home game was postponed because of an unsafe roof was April 12, 2001, also with the Royals in town. In that incident two roof panels collided during a routine test and tore a hole in the roof, sending debris down onto the field.

The closure around the CN Tower includes the sidewalk on the south side of Front Street, which is closed from John Street to Blue Jays Way.
