A man in his 70s has died in hospital after being pulled from a burning apartment in the city’s east end.

Emergency crews were called to the scene at a Toronto Community Housing building on Strathmore Boulevard, near Danforth and Greenwood avenues, just before 4 a.m. on Wednesday.

The fire reportedly broke out at a unit on the 13th floor.

“Upon arrival, our crews discovered a fire in one of the units on the upper floors,” Deputy Fire Chief Jim Jessop said.

“During the primary search, we rescued and removed one occupant that was vital signs absent, from the unit.”

First aid and CPR were performed immediately on the man by the firefighters before he was brought down and put into the care of Toronto Paramedic Services.

He was rushed to hospital where he later died.

In a statement released by Toronto Community Housing, the organization said it’s saddened at the passing of its tenant and added that the building’s fire alarm and life safety systems were all working at the time of the fire.

Officials have been called in to investigate.

Jessop said there was another fatal fire in the same building in late 2017.
