Police believe Pickering Ribfest shooting not a random act

Durham police say four people were taken to hospital following a shooting at the Pickering Ribfest.

Officers tell 680 NEWS they responded to the area near Pickering Civic Complex where the Ribfest was being held at around 11 p.m. on Saturday.

Police initially said three people were injured but confirmed a fourth victim with gunshot wounds in the early hours of Sunday.

Three males were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. A fourth male made his own way to hospital with non-life-threatening wounds. All four men have been released.

Police say two of the victims were from Ajax, aged 16 and 17. The other two victims were a 20-year-old man from Pickering and a 30-year-old man from North York.

It is unclear how many guns were fired but police say one suspect is described as a Black male wearing dark clothing.

One witness said as soon as he heard gunshots, he grabbed both his daughters and ran away. He called the experience “surreal” and said you would never expect it to happen.

Police do not believe the incident was a random act.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is being asked to contact police.
