Toronto temperature breaks record high, but no heat warning issued

By News Staff

Temperatures broke a record and made for a sweltering day in Toronto Wednesday, but the GTA was not under a heat warning.

The temperature hit 33.9 C at Pearson airport Wednesday afternoon, feeling more like 42 with the humidity. Previously, the hottest Sept. 5 was in 1945, when it reached 31.7 C.

Environment Canada issues a heat warning when the temperature is forecast to reach 31 C or warmer for two or more consecutive days and is not expected to drop below 20 C in the evening. Tuesday’s high in Toronto was 27 C.

The agency will also put out a warning when the humidex is expected to reach 40 or higher for two or more consecutive days.

Warnings are in place in other parts of southern Ontario, including Hamilton, to alert people to the risk of heat stroke and heat exhaustion.

Showers and thunderstorms are possible after 7 p.m. which could make it cooler, but still humid, in some parts.

A cold front will move through Wednesday evening, bringing an end to the hot, humid weather.

Thursday’s high will be near 24 C.

The average maximum temperature for Sept. 5 is 23; the average low is 13 C.

After a brief cooldown on the weekend, it will warm up again next week.
