The mother of a three-year-old boy who drowned in the Grand River earlier this year has been charged in his death.

Police say Michelle Hanson, 35, of Amaranth, failed to stop at a road closure sign and her minivan ended up in the Grand River near Orangeville on Feb. 21.

Her son Kaden Young was swept away and his body was found by a fisherman on April 21.

Hanson, who has previously been charged with assault against her husband following Kaden’s disappearance, has been charged with impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death, and criminal negligence causing death.

She has been released on a promise to appear and is scheduled to be back in court on November 6.

In the days and weeks following Kaden’s disappearance, members of the community dedicated countless hours of their time to find the 3-year-old.

Search parties were organized and a blue ribbon was adopted as a symbol for their efforts to find the toddler.

After Kaden’s body was finally recovered in April, Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner Vince Hawkes tweeted “our heartfelt sympathy to the family of Kaden Young, may you find peace and comfort.”
