The province’s Special Investigations Unit has been called in following a police-involved shooting in Hamilton that left a 30-year-old woman woman dead.

Shortly after 1 a.m. police were called to a residence on King Street East near Wellington Street North following reports a person was armed with a knife.

SIU investigator Carm Piro says officers responded and during the course of an interaction with a woman in the apartment, one officer discharged his taser while another officer discharged his firearm, striking the woman. The female was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition, where she succumbed to her injuries.

While the SIU would not comment on how many shots were fired, a local resident tells CityNews she heard as many as five gunshots.

The SIU is an arm’s length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
