The family of Barry and Honey Sherman want to demolish the home where they were found dead in December 2017.
An application for a demolition permit for 50 Old Colony Road was submitted Feb. 11 by a representative of the family.
The representative says the property has been vacant for the past year and holds “bad memories” for the Sherman family. He adds it cannot be sold as is due to a “stigma” attached to it after the billionaire couple was found murdered in the home.
“It pains them to have it sit there,” the application reads. “It is the family’s desire to level the house, clean up the site, fill in the pool and put the lot up for sale.”
Jaye Robinson, Councillor for Ward 15 where the home is located has “given her blessing” for the demolition.
Barry and Honey Sherman were found dead inside the North York home by a real estate agent. Their home had been up for sale at the time of their death. Police said at the time there was no sign of forced entry.
Police initially treated the scene as a murder-suicide but autopsy results showed the couple died from “ligature neck compression.” It wasn’t until late January that police said they were treating the deaths as a double homicide.
The family hired their own private investigators to probe the murders and in October 2017, offered a reward of up to $10-million for information leading to an arrest and prosecution.
Toronto police tell CityNews there is no update on the investigation at this time.
The application for demolition will go before the North York Community Council for consideration on March 19.
