Worker rescued from trench in Scarborough

By News Staff

Emergency crews received a well-earned round of applause after rescuing a worker from a 2.4-metre trench in Scarborough on Wednesday night.

Firefighters, police and paramedics were called to Generation Boulevard and Rainbow Ridge Avenue, near Sheppard and Meadowvale, around 6 p.m. after a man working at the location became trapped in the trench.

Upon arrival he was conscious and talking with firefighters, but concrete and sand was filling up the hole, creating a tense race against time.

Special equipment was brought in to aid in the rescue, and Toronto Police Const. David Hopkinson warned that the situation could turn life-threatening if the trench fully collapsed.

Around 8:30 p.m. the man was pulled from the trench.

The worker was taken to hospital, but police say his injuries do not appear life-threatening.
