Fans reflect on Kurt Cobain’s legacy 25 years after death

By News Staff

Nirvana singer, songwriter and guitar player Kurt Cobain died by suicide 25 years ago, but for his legion of fans that ill-fated day is still seared in their memories.

Cobain, whose mix of punk pugnacity and pop appeal brought grunge to the mainstream, was just 27-years-old when he died from a self-inflicted gunshot.

Although he died on April 5, the news only became public three days later, on April 8, when his body was found in a room above the garage of his Seattle home. A shotgun, drug paraphernalia and a one-page suicide note were found near his body.

On Friday, fans around the world took to social media to recall how and where they learned of his death.

On the CityNews Facebook page, David Canning wrote: “Getting ready to go out. My late father asked if I had (a) ticket to see Nirvana, and I said yes. He then told me I wasn’t (going) as he was on the news (and) he had died. Still unbelievable, he was a talented musician that spoke for a generation.”

Jennifer Worsdale wrote that she was “Watching the news in my parent’s family room, with my sister and brother, all three of us stunned and disbelieving. I remember my Mum saying that it was the equivalent of John Lennon’s death for her generation.”

Cobain was trending on Twitter, where fans recalled learning of the sad news of his untimely death and shared the impact his music had on them.
