A 21-year-old man is dead and a police officer was taken to the hospital after a shooting incident in East Toronto Tuesday night.
Monica Hudon with the province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said Toronto police officers were investigating a vehicle on Midland Avenue at around 8 p.m.
Officers attempted to stop the vehicle near Midwest Road, but the vehicle moved forward and struck a police officer, she said.
“Another police officer discharged his firearm at the vehicle multiple times,” she said. “The man was struck [and] was transported to hospital where he was pronounced dead.”
There were three other people in the vehicle, Hudon added.
On Wednesday the SIU said the officer was treated and has been released from hospital.
Eight witness officers and one subject officer have been assigned to the case.
An autopsy will be performed on the deceased person on Thursday morning. His name is not being released as family have not given consent.
The SIU is an arms-length agency of the province that investigates incidents involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegation of sexual assault.
