Don’t call 911 if your refrigerator is leaking, Peel police say

By Momin Qureshi and News Staff

Peel police are peeved that people, once again, have to be reminded that 911 is for emergencies only.

“While we understand that a water leak from your refrigerator is concerning and annoying, it’s definitely not a call for 911 and no we won’t come and clean it up. Instead, shut off the water and call a plumber. #NotFor911,” police said in a tweet on Tuesday.

The issue of calling the police emergency line has come into the spotlight lately when it comes to people calling and complaining about Amber Alerts, but according to Peel police, it happens all the time.

They say almost one in every four calls to 911 are for non-emergencies.

Other examples include an ice cream truck parked on someone’s street too long, parking issues and even just to get directions.

Police are reminding the public to call 311 for city and street issues or to use the internet to find the correct service to solve whatever problem they’re having.
