Police investigate phone scam targeting seniors in Roncesvalles

By News Staff

Toronto police are investigating an alleged phone scam that is targeting senior citizens in the Roncesvalles Avenue area.

Police said on Sept. 5 at around 1:30 p.m. a woman phoned an elderly couple claiming to be a police officer.

Investigators said the woman addressed them in Polish, a language the couple spoke as they are from Poland.

“The woman directed the couple to leave their money and jewelry in a bag outside of their home,” police said. “The woman claimed this would assist the police in capturing violent criminals about to engage in a criminal act.”

The couple did as the woman asked and later found the bag, money and other valuables were gone, police said.

“The Toronto Police Service wishes to remind the public that police officers would never telephone anyone and direct them to part with their valuables to assist in an investigation or for any other purported reason,” police said.

There is no suspect description at this time, police said.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact them or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers.
