Pedestrian killed in hit-and-run on QEW in Beamsville

By News Staff

A 28-year-old St. Catharines man has died after he was struck by a vehicle on the QEW that then fled the scene.

It happened around 3 a.m. Tuesday on the Toronto-bound QEW in Beamsville.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said a white SUV crashed and ended up on the left side of the highway. When the driver got out of the SUV he was struck by a passing vehicle.

Emergency crews pronounced the injured man dead at the scene.

Schmidt said the driver of that second vehicle stopped and then fled the scene.

He added that the victim may then have been struck by multiple other vehicles, whose drivers may not be aware that they had hit a person.

Schmidt said they have possibly identified one of the vehicles involved. They are also looking for a silver- and gold-coloured Kia or a Hyundai with significant front-end and undercarriage damage.

“The driver will certainly have known they hit something, they may not have known they hit a person,” he explained.

Police are also looking for a commercial vehicle that is either white in colour or has white components on it, and has missing wheel caps.

Investigators would like to speak with anyone who was driving in the area, who may have damaged vehicles, or if they have dash-cam footage of the area at the time.

The Toronto-bound QEW was closed at Ontario Street for nearly 11 hours while police investigated.
