Funnel clouds possible on Saturday: Environment Canada

By News staff

Environment Canada issued a special weather advisory Saturday for the possible development of funnel clouds.

The national weather agency says conditions are favourable for funnel clouds. The clouds, in rare cases, may develop into landspout tornados.

They have also received reports of funnel clouds and waterspouts this morning. More is possible this afternoon, they said.

“These types of funnel clouds are generated by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms,” Environment Canada said. “This weak rotation is normally not a danger near the ground. However, there is a chance that this rotation could intensify and become a weak landspout tornado.”

Environment Canada added that people should treat all funnel cloud sightings seriously.

“Should a funnel cloud develop nearby, prepare to take shelter,” they said. “These funnel clouds usually appear with little or no warning.”

Special weather statement for heavy rain today

A special weather statement is in effect for much of southern Ontario including Toronto as heavy rain is possible this afternoon.

The city could see between 50 to 100 mm of rain and localized flooding is possible.

There is also a risk of some thunderstorms this afternoon as well. The temperature is expected to hit 26 C.

The dual weather bulletins from Environment Canada were posted just as the city’s heat warning had finally come to an end on Saturday.

The heat warning lasted for nine days with temperatures hitting above 30 C each day. It was the first time since July 1999 that Toronto had a nine-day stretch of daytime highs in the 30s.

Toronto was hit by a nasty thunderstorm earlier this week that caused widespread power outages and flooding across the city, along with downed trees and power lines.
