After years of persistent adversity from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the popular Canadian discount retailer, Winners, has banned the use of fur.
“Winners was the last TJX Companies brand to sell fur; after PETA started calling on the company to go fur-free in 2001, its other brands started dropping the material, first in Europe and then in the United States,” PETA said in a statement.
“Winners’ move means that all of TJX Companies’ 4,500-plus stores (including HomeSense and Marshalls in Canada) are now fur-free—and PETA is renewing its call for the brands to stop selling angora, too.”
In 2019, PETA sued the City over the removal of ads calling for a boycott of the clothing company over its use of animal products.
Earlier this year, a judge dismissed the application.
“Rabbits, coyotes, and other animals are winning big with Winners’ decision to drop fur,” PETA Executive Vice President, Tracy Reiman, said on Tuesday.
“PETA hopes this will be the first of many changes for the better at TJX Companies, with a ban on hair painfully torn out of angora rabbits’ skin soon to follow.”
In September, a group of animal welfare activists protested ahead of the Toronto International Film Festival to condemn parka maker Canada Goose’s sponsorship.
