York Region moving into modified Stage 2 on Monday

Doug Ford says York Region will revert back into modified Stage 2 COVID-19 restrictions as of 12:01 a.m. Monday. The premier says the move comes as the area sees a rise in coronavirus cases and an "alarming level" of critical care admissions.

Premier Doug Ford announced that York Region will be moving into modified Stage 2 restrictions as of 12:01 a.m. on Monday.

The restrictions will be in place for 28 days.

York Region joins Toronto, Peel Region, and Ottawa in modified Stage 2, which bans indoor dining in restaurants, and closes indoor gyms, casinos, cinemas, and interactive exhibits.

“I hate doing this my friends, honestly, I hate this,” Ford said in his daily update on Friday.

He added that it was a difficult but necessary decision to make to avoid a full lockdown.

“The indicators are going in the wrong direction,” Ford said.

“We”re seeing a rapid increase in the rate of infection with the positivity rate of 2.77 per cent, above the high alert threshold of 2.5 per cent. Cases per 100,000 in York are now nearly 39; well, well above the provincial average.”

Ontario reported 712 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday. Sixty-two of those new cases are in York Region, which has been seeing a rise in cases.
