A Canadian restaurant industry group says more than 10,000 eateries have disappeared since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
On Wednesday, Restaurants Canada asked Canadians to imagine life without local restaurants.
That’s the message in a new campaign, which includes a one-minute video reminding people about the importance of restaurants in our day-to-day lives and for special occasions.
“The vast majority of Canadian consumers are concerned that restaurants in their community may not survive and feel that restaurants are an important part of their community,” said Todd Barclay, President, and CEO of Restaurants Canada.
“The holiday season is usually one of the busiest times of the year for restaurants. This year, with so many under lockdown, it will be devastating. We are asking consumers to take a stand and show their support for their local restaurants during this crucial time of the year.”

Restaurants Canada says an estimated 800,000 jobs have been lost to date, with the industry struggling to recover due to “revolving” restrictions across Canada.
In the meantime, Canadians are being asked to help out – by supporting their local food and drink establishments this holiday season by buying gift cards, ordering takeout or delivery, and dining in where possible.
The organization says with so many regions under lockdown, the coming weeks could be devastating for restaurants if customers don’t “take a stand.”
“It really does take a village and together we can support the foodservice and hospitality industry – from restaurants and bars to farmers, to food and beverage brands – for all those times they supported us,” Barclay continued.
