Premier Doug Ford said Wednesday that a decision on whether Ontario schools will reopen next week for in-class learning will be coming “in the next day or so.”
Ford said he would be sitting down with Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Williams, and other health officials to hear their advice before rendering a decision.
As part of a province-wide lockdown that went into effect on December 26, Ford and Education Minister Stephen Lecce announced that students enrolled in in-class learning would not return to class during the first week of the year, opting instead for remote learning.
Elementary school students are currently taking part in remote learning with a scheduled return to in-person learning on January 11.
Secondary students are scheduled to learn remotely until January 24, with a possible return to the classroom the next day.
However, secondary school students in northern Public Health Units were set to return on January 11.
Ford’s hesitance to commit to those reopening dates come after a string of record-setting daily COVID-19 case counts in Ontario.
On Wednesday, the province announced 3,266 new cases, pushing the provincial total over 200,000.
