Scalping provincial park camping spots ‘unacceptable’: Ford

By News staff

Calling it “unacceptable” Premier Doug Ford vowed Thursday to look into reports that people are scalping coveted provincial park camping spots at steep markups.

“No one should be scalping their lots in a provincial park,” Ford told CityNews Thursday. “It’s provincially-owned, it’s owned by the people. I think it’s terrible someone would do that.”

“These parks are for families and for people to gather outdoors,” he added.

In a statement, a Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks spokesperson said the government is currently “looking into how to address this issue.”

“The ministry does not condone reselling reservations for a profit and are concerned that there are some circumstances where these transfers are not used for legitimate reasons.”

In February, Ontario Parks reported that campsite reservations were already being snagged up at a furious pace, saying that bookings made between Jan. 1 and Feb. 5 increased almost 100 per cent over the previous year.
