Ontario Parks taking action against scalpers caught reselling camping reservations

By News Staff, Julie Arounlasy

Campers who have reserved sites at Ontario Parks are not permitted to resell any of their reservations for profit starting Saturday.

If scalpers are caught trying to sell a reservation for profit, for example, listing a reservation on social media or buy and sell websites, the reservation may be cancelled and all applicable penalty fees will apply.

“We don’t condone reselling Ontario Parks reservations for a profit and we take concerns raised by our visitors very seriously. We know that there are instances where individuals are attempting to sell reservations with the intention to make a profit,” a spokesperson for the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks said in a statement.

Campsite bookings are up over 135 per cent according to a tweet from Ontario Parks.

This announcement comes after the government agency tweeted they’re extending the closure of campground and backcountry campsites and roofed accommodations (including cabins, yurts and cottages) due to the stay-at-home order.

Provincial parks and conservation reserves are available for local and day-use activities, such as walking or hiking.

Cancellation or shortened stay fees for a campsite are based on how long a reservation has been held, with the lowest charge being a 10 per cent penalty fee of total fees paid for a reservation held for one month or less.

The highest charge is a 50 per cent penalty fee for a reservation held for over four months.
