A 70-year-old woman is facing several charges including kidnapping after the disappearance of an 11-month-old girl triggered an Amber Alert early Friday morning.

Ottawa police say a woman who was visiting the city from Nunavut called police around 11:15 p.m. Thursday night to report a woman had taken her child.

Police commenced an intensive ground search in the area of Carling Avenue and Pinecrest Road and an Amber Alert was issued just before 4 a.m. Friday, alleging the baby had been abducted.

At around 8:30 a.m., police say they located a potential witness they had been searching for in the area. They were eventually led to an apartment on Pinecrest Road where they heard a baby crying inside and upon entering, found the missing child.

Due to her medical condition, the baby was taken to a hospital for further examination.

Police said a woman was taken into custody and that there is no known association between the suspect, the mother and the child.

Later in the afternoon, police charged a 70-year-old woman one count of kidnapping, one count of not providing the necessaries of life, one count obstructing police and one count aggravated assault. Her name has not been released at this time.
