Alectra Utilities warns of scam targeting Barrie tornado victims

By News staff

Alectra Utilities is warning residents about a scam targeting the victims of Thursday’s tornado in Barrie.

The utility company said they have received reports of individuals going door-to-door in the neighbourhoods impacted by the tornado. The scammer poses as an Alectra employee and asks for money to inspect the home to ensure it was safe.

The person had an Alectra “door hangar” notice that is typically left on customer doors.

Residents in tornado-stricken areas are asked to be cautious and contact police if they are approached by the scammers.

Between 100 and 150 buildings were damaged and over 60 are considered inhabitable after and EF2 tornado touched down in south Barrie.
