The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing a two-vehicle crash in Brampton that left a 21-year-old woman dead and sent a man to hospital with serious injuries.

The crash happened early Friday morning at the intersection of Dixie Road and Sandalwood Parkway East.

The SIU said around 2:45 a.m., an OPP officer was trying to pull over a vehicle during a traffic stop but the driver fled and crashed into another vehicle.

The SIU said two people were taken to hospital, and the woman later died of her injuries. She has since been identified as Shellome Peart.

Earlier, paramedics said a male suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries.

According to SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette, the woman killed was in a vehicle that was struck by the driver of a black car who was fleeing police “at a high rate of speed.”

The area was closed to traffic for several hours, but has since reopened.
