Durham Regional Police say one man is in custody following an hours-long, armed standoff at a residence, resulting in three nearby schools being placed in a hold-and-secure.
Clara Hughes Public School, St. Hedwig Catholic School and David Bouchard Public School — in the area of Olive Avenue and Wilson Road South in southeast Oshawa — were placed under a temporary lockdown, which has since been lifted.
“We have just been advised by Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) that the ‘Hold and Secure’ order… has now been lifted,” the Durham District School Board said.
An investigation began early Thursday after an armed person shut themselves inside a residence on Highland Avenue. In an update from police, they say one person is in custody and that the situation has been deemed safe.
“Thanks for everyone’s patience. This investigation is still ongoing,” investigators said.
People are being asked to avoid the area in the meantime.
