A 5-year-old girl has died from injuries sustained in a single-car crash near Centennial Park in Etobicoke.

Police responded to reports of a crash on Renforth Drive just north of Rathburn Road shortly after 9 p.m on Saturday.

Investigators confirm a 31-year-old woman was driving a white Nissan Versa southbound when she lost control and hit a tree just east of Renforth Drive.

One of the car occupants, a 5-year-old girl, was unconscious and without vital signs as fire crews worked to free her from the car.

Emergency services managed to free the girl, and they were taken to a pediatric trauma centre, where she was pronounced dead.

“Police are interested in speaking anyone who may have witnessed the collision as well as local residents, businesses or drivers who may have security or dash-camera footage of the area or incident,” Const. Laura Brabant said on Sunday.

The woman was transported to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation is ongoing.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this story had the girl’s age as six, but Toronto Police have since confirmed a five-year-old died from her injuries in hospital.
