Toronto police warn of phone scam targeting grandparents

By Dilshad Burman

Toronto police are warning the public about an ongoing phone scam that is targeting seniors in the city.

They say the scammers call a senior pretending to be their grandchild, claiming they’ve been arrested and need to be bailed out with cash.

The phone is then passed to another person who poses as a police officer and they demand a cash payment for the grandchild’s release.

The fake police officer tells the grandparent to withdraw money from their bank and put it in an envelope, which they are told to hand over to a man who later goes to their residence to collect it.

The grandparent is also warned of a “gag order” and told not to discuss the incident with anyone else.

Police are asking anyone who receives such a call to contact them.

“Police never contact family members and request cash bail or send some one to their home to pick up bail money,” they said in a release.
