Mississauga mayor Bonnie Crombie tests positive for COVID-19

Mississauga mayor Bonnie Crombie says she has tested positive for COVID-19.

In a statement on Friday, Crombie says she remains in “good spirits” and is currently isolating at home.

“My symptoms are thankfully mild, which is a reminder of the importance of getting vaccinated, if you haven’t been yet,” she tweeted.

Crombie did not indicate if she had tested positive for the Omicron variant, which is responsible for the spike in cases over the last few weeks.

This past week Crombie attended an event on Dec. 23 in support of Open Window Hub which helps individuals dealing with homelessness and/or mental health issues while also attending her regular COVID-19 briefing at City Hall the previous day.

Peel Region reported 1,113 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday, with Mississauga accounting for 57 per cent of the new infections.

Ontario reported 9,571 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, the highest daily total since the start of the pandemic. However, experts believe the testing backlog in the province means the true number of infections caused by the Omicron variant is actually much higher than being reported.

Infectious diseases expert Dr. Isaac Bogoch says he expects cases to continue to rise with more opportunities for transmission as people gather for the holidays. He estimates a peak could occur shortly after Jan. 1.
