A elderly person has died at a three-alarm house fire in Scarborough early Saturday morning.
Fire crews were called to Scarborough Golf Club and Kingston Roads just after 3:30 a.m.
It was initially called a second-alarm, but was upgraded to third alarm.
Firefighters found heavy flames on arrival and smoke in the basement, but it’s unclear if that’s where the fire originated. There was a possiblity of occupants still in the home when they arrvived so crews began conducting search operations.
During these operations which Toronto Fire say occurred in very dangerous conditions, a floor collapsed plunging fire crews into the fire. Five firefighters suffered smoke inhalation and minor injuries, but are expected to recover.
One person was located without vital signs in the home and paramedics preformed CPR, but the victim succumbed to their injuries.
All other occupants were able to evacuate the home with help from police and fire crews. TTC shelter buses were ordered to keep them warm.
The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office has been called in to investigate.
Fire Chief Matthew Pegg called the blaze “a very difficult and tragic fire scene” and expressed his condolences to “family friends and all those impacted by this terrible fire,” in a tweet.
