Metrolinx to cut GO service by 15 per cent on Monday

Metrolinx says rising levels of staff absenteeism due to the rapidly spreading Omicron COVID variant will force it cut GO Train and bus service by 15 per cent starting Monday.

The provincial transit agency says staffing levels are being impacted 30 per cent each day as a result of the virus which means fewer employees to operate trains, drive buses, maintain and clean vehicles.

“Given the rapid transmission of this variant, the absenteeism level at Metrolinx is expected to increase over the next few weeks, so proactive mitigation measures are necessary to protect critical transit services,” the agency said, noting public health officials expect this latest wave of the pandemic to last through the next “few weeks or months.”

“Cancelled trains will not always be able to be replaced by buses as every part of the business is affected by high absenteeism.”

Metrolinx says it will spread out the cancellations strategically, doing their best to protect new services and maintain GO bus routes as much as possible.
