Son charged with murder in connection with mother’s death in Newmarket

A Newmarket man facing murder charges in relation to the death of his mother. The 61-year-old was rushed to hospital Wednesday evening, but died shortly later.

A Newmarket man has been charged with murder in connection with his mother’s death.

York Regional Police responded to a domestic dispute call at a townhouse near Gorham and Leslie streets just after 5 p.m on Wednesday.

When officers arrived they found a 61-year-old woman with life-threatening injuries and arrested a suspect at the scene.

The victim was rushed to hospital where she was pronounced dead. Police allege the woman was stabbed multiple times.

Police confirmed Thursday that the woman’s 25-year-old son is in custody and has been charged with second-degree murder and arson.

Police say they will not release the identity of the victim or suspect in order to protect additional members of the family who witnessed the incident.
