Ontario marks renewal deadline for drivers with G-class, commercial licences

As Amanda Ferguson explains, more and more teens are using public transit and Uber and holding off on getting behind the wheel of a car.

For many Ontario drivers whose licences expired between 2020 and 2022, an extension on the suspension of renewals for several licence classes ends at the end of the day on Monday.

The provincial government suspended renewals of licences between March 1, 2020, and the end of February.

Drivers with full G and M licences under the age of 80 who haven’t renewed their licence will be able to do so on the Ontario government’s website since new photos won’t be required for those drivers.

Commercial drivers with A, B, C, D, E and/or F licences are also required to renew their licence by the end of Monday too.

The regular process of renewals for all of the above classes will resume on Tuesday.

When it comes to novice drivers (people with G1, G2, M1 and/or M2 licences) whose licences expire between March 1, 2020, and Dec. 31, 2022, they have until Dec. 31 to finish testing in order to keep or upgrade their licences.

If someone began driver’s education courses between March 1, 2019 and Dec. 31, 2022, they have until Dec. 31 to finish the course. The regular renewal process will resume on Jan. 1.

For seniors who are 80 and older whose licence expired after March 1, 2020, their timeframe for renewal also ends at the end of Monday.

However, for this group of seniors who see will see their licences expire between Tuesday and Aug. 31, the licence can be renewed at a ServiceOntario since this senior driver group education session program is suspended until the end of August. As of Sept. 1, regular renewal policies will resume.
