Toronto police officer seriously hurt after shooting himself in hand, leg

By Lucas Casaletto

A Toronto Police officer sustained serious injuries after accidentally shooting himself on Thursday.

A spokesperson tells CityNews that officers responded to a call at CF Fairview Mall in North York around 2:45 p.m. when there was “an accidental discharge of a firearm” and the officer injured himself in the hand and the leg.

Const. Caroline de Kloet says the officer’s injuries are serious but not life-threatening, and he has been taken to the hospital for treatment.

“At this time, he has been listed as being in stable condition,” de Kloet says.

No one else was injured, and police say Professional Standards are investigating the matter.

It’s unclear if the Special Investigations Unit (SIU) will invoke its mandate and take over the case.

The SIU is an independent government agency that investigates the conduct of officials that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
