A man is in custody after he allegedly stole multiple vehicles and caused a series of collisions through Etobicoke and Mississauga on Tuesday evening.

There were multiple crashes reported in the area of Burnhamthorpe Road and Highway 427, after 8 p.m., where one vehicle was said to be dragged for a long distance and a car crashed into a church.

Peel police also responded to a seven-vehicle collision at Dixie Road and The Queensway around the same time.

Police tell CityNews a suspect on foot carjacked a car near the first series of incidents in Etobicoke and crashed it into the back of a truck shortly after. The suspect then vacated the stolen car and carjacked the truck.

He drove off in the truck with the car still wedged underneath.

The unoccupied wedged car eventually broke free and veered into a hydro pole on the side of the road before crashing into a church.

The suspect then continued into Mississauga and started driving in the wrong direction on Dixie Road before crashing into oncoming traffic near The Queensway and causing a seven-vehicle collision.

One female was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries but police say “it’s a miracle no one was seriously injured” in the series of crashes.

The suspect, a man in his 30s, was arrested at the Mississauga crash scene. He is previously known to police and two officers suffered minor injuries in the struggle to arrest him.

The intersection of Dixie and The Queensway was closed for the investigation but has since reopened.
