S&P/TSX composite up in late-morning trading, U.S. stock markets also higher

TORONTO — Gains in the technology sector helped lead Canada’s main stock index higher in late-morning trading, while U.S. stock markets also gained ground.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 85.14 points at 21,963.55.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 387.40 points at 34,799.09. The S&P 500 index was up 55.30 points at 4,446.99, while the Nasdaq composite was up 218.87 points at 13,551.23.

The Canadian dollar traded for 79.20 cents US compared with 79.25 cents US on Monday.  

The June crude contract was down US$4.53 at US$103.08 per barrel and the May natural gas contract was down 85 cents at US$6.97 per mmBTU.

The June gold contract was down US$30.60 at US$1,955.80 an ounce and the May copper contract was down nine cents at US$4.71 a pound.
