Toronto mayor John Tory files nomination papers for re-election

The nomination period opened on Monday for the offices of Mayor, Ward/Regional Councillor and School Board Trustee for the 2022 Municipal Election.

The period to file began May 1, but since clerk offices are not open on weekends, nominations started to be accepted Monday morning. The 2022 municipal elections are expected to take place on October 24 across Ontario.

Nomination forms will be accepted until August 19 at 2 p.m.

Tory seeks third term as mayor of Toronto

In Toronto, Mayor John Tory announced in March that he would be seeking a third term. Tory first won office in 2014 and again in 2018. If he is re-elected and serves the entire four-year term, he would become Toronto’s longest-serving mayor.

“We need leadership that works now more than ever. It’s time to protect our progress and continue our work to make sure Toronto comes out of this pandemic stronger than ever,” Tory said on Twitter.

“I want to sincerely thank those for endorsing my run… I look forward to the opportunity to continue that work, together.”

In Ottawa, Mayor Jim Watson said in December that he would not seek re-election. By the time October rolls around, Watson will have been mayor for 12 years.

The municipal election cycle kicks off just as the Ontario provincial election campaign is expected to get underway this week.

The Ontario Liberal Party said on Monday if elected in June, it would cut fares for all public transit agencies in the province to $1 per ride. The slashed fares would go into effect within 100 days of a Liberal government being elected and remain in place until January 2024.
