The Spelling Bee of Canada crowned its three big winners on Sunday.
Following a series of virtual competitions that took place coast-to-coast, 42 finalists from three age categories advanced to the finals which were held in-person for the first time in two years at the Toronto Reference Library.
In the Intermediate category, for ages 12 to 14, a tie-breaker was needed to determine the winner, which featured words that were not available for study to the participants. In the end it came down to 14-year-old Ryaan Khan from Bedford, N.S., and Rebha Badan from Edmonton. After Badan misspelled “contemporaneous”, Khan went on to correctly spell the word “prelapsarian” to take the title.
According to Merriam-Webster, prelapsarian is the “characteristic of or belonging to the time or state before the fall of humankind.”
In the Junior category (ages 7 to 9), 10-year-old Kavya Senthil of Milton, Ont., won with the word “ecosystem” while eight-year-old Anhad Singh from Edmonton took the Primary category (ages 6 to 8) after correctly spelling “prelate”.
