A man and a woman are dead, and another person is in critical condition after a multi-vehicle crash on the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) highway in Mississauga.
Peel paramedics tell CityNews the crash happened around 11 p.m. on Thursday just before the Cawthra Road exit on the QEW.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say two people died and two others were injured in the three-vehicle collision. Officers say two vehicles collided and blocked a left lane when a third vehicle crashed into the stopped cars.
“A very tragic situation here,” OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said.
“Reports are that both drivers of the initial vehicle collision were outside of their vehicle when the third vehicle collided into the back of the involved, initial vehicles causing critical and fatal injuries to both drivers and the passenger.”
One person suffered critical injuries in the crash. The OPP confirmed the driver of the third vehicle involved suffered minor injuries.
“As a result of this secondary collision, both the female driver and male driver of the two involved initial vehicles were pronounced deceased,” Schmidt said. “The investigation is ongoing.”
Schmidt says road closures that were in place in the area have since reopened.
It’s unclear what caused the crash.
