Woman lit on fire at TTC station identified, man faces 1st-degree murder charge

Police have identified the woman set on fire at Kipling station as 28-year-old Nyima Dolma, and say the man accused in the attack is now facing an upgraded charge of first-degree murder.

Toronto police say a man who allegedly set a woman on fire at the TTC’s Kipling subway station in June is now facing an upgraded charge of first-degree murder after the 28-year-old caregiver died days ago.

On June 17, investigators say a man doused a woman with a flammable liquid substance on a TTC bus and lit her on fire. Police say a man was arrested at the scene and the woman was rushed to a hospital.

The victim, identified as Nyima Dolma, died in hospital after spending more than two weeks on life support.

Homicide squad officers say it appears Dolma and the accused didn’t know each other.

Police say 33-year-old Toronto resident Tenzin Norbu, who was set to appear in court on Monday, has been charged with first-degree murder.

Investigators say Norbu was already facing several charges, including attempted murder, assault with a weapon, common nuisance endangering the lives, safety or health of the public, and mischief.

In a now-frozen GoFundMe crowding campaign created for Dolma, her sister Dawa and her family described her as a woman who has “lived a life of service to others.”

“My sister was on her way to work as a professional caregiver when she was attacked by a stranger who threw lighter fluid on her and set her on fire,” the post said.

The family has updated the campaign to say they will use the money for funeral expenses and health-care costs.

“To my sister, we love you and we miss you. We wish her soul to rest in peace,” it said.
