Toronto Maple Leafs sign Calle Järnkrok to 4-year contract

The Toronto Maple Leafs agreed to a four-year, $8.4-million contract with centre Calle Järnkrok, the team announced on Friday.

The deal carries an annual cap hit of $2.1 million. Järnkrok has a limited no-trade clause, according to TSN’s Chris Johnston.

Järnkrok, 30, split the 2021-22 season between Calgary and Seattle, registering a combined 30 points (12 goals, 18 assists) in 66 games while adding four points (one goal, three assists) in 12 playoff games with the Flames.

The Swede is well-regarded for his versatility as he can play anywhere on the ice, including both left and right wing. He’s also recognized for his smart, two-way play and should factor into Toronto’s penalty-killing group this coming season.

Järnkrok was left unprotected by his first team, Nashville, ahead of the NHL Expansion Draft and was subsequently selected by the Seattle Kraken.

The Flames then acquired him for a second-round pick in the 2022 draft, a third-round pick in the 2023 draft and a seventh-round pick in 2024.

Järnkrok was teammates with former Kraken and current Maple Leafs defenceman Mark Giordano for half a season.

General manager Kyle Dubas has been busy retooling his team’s goaltending and bottom half of the roster this summer.

The Leafs have added Järnkrok, Nicolas Aubé-Kubel and Adam Gaudette and defenceman Victor Mete and Jordie Benn to date.

The most high-profile moves saw the Maple Leafs trade goalie Petr Mrazek to Chicago and replace him with Matt Murray and Ilya Samsonov. Former starter Jack Campbell left to sign with Edmonton.

Toronto now has approximately $750,000 left in cap space, and many expect other moves to be made as restricted free agents Pierre Engvall and defenceman Rasmus Sandin seek new contracts.
