One person is dead and two others are injured after a high-speed head-on collision along the border of Scarborough and Markham on Monday night.

The crash occurred on Steeles Avenue East, between Sewells Road and Reesor Road, around 10 p.m.

Investigators say a vehicle was travelling westbound in the eastbound lanes of Steeles when it struck another vehicle head-on. The vehicle that was travelling in the wrong direction caught fire as a result of the crash.

Police confirm the driver of the other car that was hit was pronounced dead.

The wrong-way driver is in hospital in critical condition and their passenger suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Police say a Good Samaritan stopped and pulled the pair out of the mangled car right before it burst into flames.

Toronto and York Regional Police paramedics attended the scene due to the crash occurring along the border of Toronto and Markham.

Steeles Avenue East was closed in both directions between Sewells and Reesor for the investigation but the roads have since reopened.
