Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Matt Chapman is one of baseball’s hottest hitters of late — but don’t tell Drake that.
In a conversation with CityNews, the talented Blue Jays infielder talked about his time with the team, and the first time he met the Canadian music superstar, saying Drake wasn’t exactly aware of who Chapman was.
“I ran into Drake — wait, actually, let me rephrase this. I don’t think Drake knew who I was,” Chapman said.
“He happened to be at the same restaurant as me. He was in a private area. I went in, and someone said, ‘Hey, Matt Chapman is here. Drake, you need to meet him.’ And he was like, ‘Who the hell is that guy?'”
Chapman says he did wave to Drake, who nodded at him.
“I’ll take it. Hopefully, Drake comes to a Jays game one of these days and learns who I am. I am obviously a big fan,” Chapman said.

If the 29-year-old’s recent streak is any indication, it won’t take long for Drake to discover who Chapman is.
Toronto’s third baseman enters Tuesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, hitting .412/.500/.902 in his last 15 games, with seven home runs and 17 RBIs.
Impressively, Chapman finished the month of July slugging .325/.396/.699 with nine home runs across 25 games. Sixteen of Chapman’s 20 home runs this year have come at the Rogers Centre, where he says he’s grown to adore the Canadian fan base.
“It’s been a lot of fun, an absolute blast. Coming to Canada and getting that new experience with my wife, her family and my family… getting to play in front of all of these fans. It’s a whole new experience of what I have been used to the last five years,” Chapman said.
The 29-year-old, noted for his fielding prowess and strong arm at third base, was acquired by the Blue Jays from the Oakland Athletics on March 16 for four players, including prospects Gunnar Hoglund and Kevin Smith.
“It’s been a new team. I’ve just wanted to make a good impression,” he said, discussing his first home run as a Blue Jay, which he hit on April 10. “It was a ton of fun, putting on the [home run] jacket.”
In his first full season in Toronto, Chapman has proved his worth on the field. Now, if only Drake would take notice.
