The bodies of two missing men have been pulled from a trench that collapsed at a construction site in Ajax, police confirmed on Tuesday morning.

Emergency crews were called to the site on Rossland Road, near Westney Road, just before noon on Monday.

Police in Durham Region said four workers fell into the trench when it collapsed at the site of a new storm sewer catch basin installation.

One worker was airlifted to a Toronto hospital, while another was taken to a local hospital in Durham.

The two other workers were unaccounted for and police believed they were trapped inside. Durham police confirmed the two men were found dead around 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday after an extensive rescue operation.

Residents in the area said the families of the two missing men were at the scene, waiting for an update on their loved ones.

“We [were] hoping for a miracle that they’d come out … it’s a hard sight to see,” one woman said.

The two other injured workers suffered broken bones but are in stable condition.

Police also said a drone hovering in the area interfered with the ORNGE air ambulance’s ability to take off from the scene.

“I don’t think it’s impacted the medical condition of the patient. However, it could at some point, so we’re asking people to keep their drones out of the air,” Sgt. Joanna Bortoluss said.

Road closures in the area have since reopened.

The cause of the trench collapse is not yet known.

In an update Tuesday, the Ministry of Labour (MOL) revealed that the constructor is Grascan Construction Ltd., and the employer of the involved workers is Direct Underground Inc.

The MOL said said one requirement was issued to Grascan Construction Ltd., but no details were provided.

    The investigation remains open.
