Weekend need to know: Air Show, Labour Day weekend, TTC updates, road closures

The Canadian international air show will be taking over the skies over exhibition place for the first time in three years. Melissa Nakhavoly has more on what you need to know if you’re planning on heading down to the CNE this long weekend.

It’s the Labour Day long weekend, and along with the return of the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) comes the return of the Canadian International Air Show.

The TTC also announced they would be ramping up certain subway, bus and streetcar services to match an expected surge in riders this fall.

Luckily, no TTC closures are scheduled for this long weekend, but there are expected road closures. Scroll below for more details.

Here’s what’s happening this weekend:


Events

Canadian International Air Show

Canada’s longest-running air show, located in downtown Toronto, is returning this Labour Day weekend.

The show will run from Saturday to Monday from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

The event is located within Marilyn Bell Park, directly in front of the Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex and the CNE fair.

People can also see the show from across Lakeshore.

Performers include the Canadian Forces Skyhawks Demonstration Team, RCAF CF-18 Demonstration Team, USAF F-35 Demonstration Team, Gord Price & The Yak-50, and more.

MuslimFest

MuslimFest will be held in Mississauga at Celebration Square this Friday to Sunday.

The festival will include Muslim artists, comedy shows, a multicultural bazaar, and a kids’ carnival.

Event hours:

Friday, 12 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Saturday, 12 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Sunday, 12 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Ashkenaz Festival

This festival celebrating Jewish culture has returned to Harbourfront Centre and runs until Monday.

In total, the festival will include approximately 50 events at the waterfront and other venues in the city.

BuskerFest

BuskerFest is where you’ll want to be to see circus artistry, daredevils, hula hoop artists, and other one-of-a-kind street performances over the weekend.

The event kicks off on Friday at Woodbine Park.

The festival is also organized by and supports Epilepsy Toronto.

Friday, 12 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Saturday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Sunday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Monday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Toronto Dragon Festival

The Toronto Dragon Festival will be held at Nathan Phillips Square from Friday to Sunday.

The event is hosted by the Canadian Association of Chinese Performing Arts.

The festival’s “Reflection Water Show” will have ambient lighting and colourful costumes on Nathan Phillips Square’s reflecting pool, along with other performances and Chinese cuisine.

Road closures

Events
The following roads will be closed to traffic from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Monday for the Labour Day parade:

  • Queen Street West between Bay Street and University Avenue
  • University Avenue between Dundas Street West and Richmond Street West
  • York Street between Queen Street West and Richmond Street West
  • Armoury Street between University Avenue and Centre Avenue

 

As well, Queen Street West from University Avenue to Dufferin Street and Dufferin Street from Queen Street West to Exhibition Place will be closed to drivers from 9:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. on Monday due to the parade.

Grace Street from College Street to the first laneway south of College Street will be closed to vehicle traffic from 6 a.m. on Sunday until 3 a.m. on Monday for Little Italy Sunday Funday.

Market Street continues to be closed from Front Street East to The Esplanade for I Heart Market Street activities.

Construction
Traffic lane reductions on Queen’s Park between Bloor Street West and Queen’s Park Crescent due to the TTC elevator installation work at Museum Station.

Two eastbound lanes on Lake Shore Boulevard west of Don Roadway and the northbound lane on the Don Valley Parkway on-ramp at Lake Shore Boulevard will be closed to vehicle traffic from 9 p.m. on Friday until 9 p.m. on Monday as Enbridge crews conduct investigative work on a gas main. Northbound access and southbound egress will be maintained at the off-ramp.

Westbound Lake Shore Boulevard East between Lower Sherbourne and Lower Jarvis streets is reduced to a single lane until 9 p.m. on September 9 due to the Enbridge gas main installation. The westbound through the lane to access Gardiner Expressway will be maintained, as well as the westbound right-turn lane to northbound Jarvis Street.

The Queensway has a reduced number of lanes in both directions between Parkside Drive and Roncesvalles Avenue for TTC track replacement and road reconstruction work. King Street West will re-open to through traffic on September 3 at the King-Queen-Queensway-Roncesvalles intersection, and eastbound left turns will continue to not be permitted from The Queensway to Glendale Avenue.

Wellington Street from Yonge to Church Street is reduced to a single westbound lane, and Front Street from Scott Street to Church Street is reduced to a single eastbound lane for TTC track replacement and sidewalk improvements.

The intersection of Carlton and Church streets will remain closed all weekend for streetcar track replacement.

Bayview Avenue from Rosedale Valley Road to Lawren Harris Square and the portion of River Street West between Bayview Avenue and Spruce Street will be closed to vehicle traffic from 7 a.m. on Saturday until 7 p.m. on Sunday.

High Park
Roads within High Park are closed to vehicle traffic during the weekend.
