Driver ‘lucky to be alive’ after car slams into back of truck on Hwy. 401

Police say a driver is lucky to be alive after a horrific overnight crash on Highway 401 in Mississauga.

The collision occurred in the westbound collector lanes of the highway near Mavis Road, around 12:45 a.m. on Friday.

The OPP say a car smashed into the back of a transport truck that was stopped due to traffic congestion.

A photo tweeted out by police shows the car almost completely destroyed following the crash.

The driver, a 40-year-old man, was transported to hospital with serious injuries but is expected to survive. Police say the truck driver was not hurt.

There is no word on if any charges will be laid.

All lanes of the highway have reopened following an investigation.

Approximately 24 hours earlier, a 55-year-old man was seriously injured following a similar crash in the same area.

Police say a pickup truck crashed into the back of a transport truck in the westbound 401 express lanes between Hurontario and Mavis. The pickup truck ended up underneath the larger vehicle.

Paramedics say a man was trapped in the wreckage and crews had to perform a “complicated extrication” to remove him.
