TMU holding drop-off for collection of Ryerson-branded materials

A new program from Toronto Metropolitan University is hoping students and employees will drop-off their Ryerson-branded materials to upcycle, reuse or recycle them.

Through the Branded Materials Transition Project, people can submit their merchandise, apparel, stationery and keepsakes with the Ryerson name, including Rams apparel, to be “transitioned” in a responsible way.

The university was renamed after a group enlisted by the school’s president, Dr. Mohamed Lachemi, to look into the life and legacy of Egerton Ryerson and his connection to the harmful residential school system made a recommendation to change the name.

Ryerson is widely seen as a key architect in the system that separated Indigenous children from their families.

In June 2021, on the heels of the discovery of 215 unmarked graves near the site of a former residential school in British Columbia, a statue of Egerton Ryerson on the university’s grounds was toppled by protestors.

The drop-off for branded gear is located at the Mattamy Athletic Centre, 50 Gould St. in Toronto, room 3319 and is open to the general public. It’s being held on Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., but anyone who wishes to have their items disposed of can contact the Branded Materials Transition Project.

The project started with professional and office items but has now expanded to all materials with the brand on it.
