York regional police have withdrawn charges against the husband of a woman who was murdered inside a Vaughan residence, resulting in a new arrest.

Fire crews in York Region responded to a structure fire in the Parktree Drive and Lucena Crescent area around 7:45 p.m. on Friday, September 23.

Police on the scene located a woman inside the residence. She was rushed to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

On Tuesday, police identified the woman as 64-year-old Naheed Askaryar of Vaughan. Through a post-mortem, investigators revealed the cause of death to be stab wounds.

Initially, authorities arrested and identified the suspect as 71-year-old Mohammad Askaryar, who police said was the victim’s husband.

In an update on Thursday, investigators announced they uncovered additional evidence that led to the arrest of 43-year-old Ahmad Shekeb Askarzada.

He was charged with first-degree murder and arson endangering life. His relation to the victim is unclear.

The charges laid against Mohammad Askaryar were withdrawn.
