CityNews 680's Carl Hanstke is on the scene of an early morning hit-and-run that left one dead, others injured. The driver of the suspect vehicle is nowhere to be found.

A woman is dead and police are searching for a driver who left the scene following an early morning highway crash in Vaughan.

The collision occurred in the southbound lanes of Highway 400 near Bass Pro Mills Drive around 3 a.m.

Police say a red Volkswagen Jetta was reportedly travelling at high speeds and rear-ended a minivan with four occupants inside, forcing the van to roll over.

A 73-year-old woman from North York was pronounced dead at the scene and three other occupants were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

“The minivan went to the left and hit the median and looks like it maybe rolled over once,” says CityNews 680 traffic reporter Jordan Kerr who was over the scene in a chopper. “The red Jetta turned right and veered into the ditch.”

The driver of the Jetta was last seen walking away from the scene. Police are appealing for them to “call a lawyer and turn themself in.”

Police describe the suspect as 35 to 40 years old with a thin build. He was last seen wearing blue jeans and carrying a reusable shopping bag.

All Southbound lanes of the 400 were closed from Rutherford to south of Langstaff for several hours. The highway reopened around 9:45 a.m..
