Hwy. 401 reopens after dump truck strikes overpass in Mississauga

It’s a messy Wednesday morning commute for many as a stretch of Highway 401 is shut down through Mississauga after a dump truck struck an overpass.

It was a messy commute for many Wednesday after a stretch of Highway 401 was shut down through Mississauga when a dump truck collided with an overpass.

A dump truck with a raised bed was travelling eastbound on the highway around 7 a.m. and attempted to drive under the pedestrian bridge at Second Line, just before Mavis Road. The bed of the truck was torn off as a result and became wedged between the overpass and the highway.

The express lanes of the eastbound 401 were closed from approaching Mavis to Highway 403 for more than seven hours, only reopening around 2:30 p.m.

Police initially expected the lanes to be reopened sometime before noon but in an update just after 11 a.m., OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the pedestrian bridge sustained damage and needed to be assessed by engineers before the highway could reopen.

“There is damage inside the overpass,” Schmidt said. “The express lanes will remain closed for several hours while the analysis is being completed.”

No injuries have been reported.

Police say the driver of the truck is being charged with unsafe operation of a motor vehicle and failure to do proper prescribed inspection.
