Camera allegedly found in Southlake Regional Health Centre restroom, person in custody

York Regional Police are investigating an alleged case of voyeurism at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket, officials say.

Derek Rowland, a Southlake Regional Health Centre spokesperson, told CityNews in an email that officers were at the hospital on Dec. 16. He said a person of interest was taken into custody.

A source at the hospital, who didn’t want to be identified due to concerns of retribution, said a camera was located in a women’s restroom. They said employees at the hospital were notified about the incident through an internal email.

“York Regional Police have assured us that there were not any immediate safety concerns for staff or patients,” Rowland wrote.

He wouldn’t confirm if the person of interest is or was employed at Southlake Regional Health Centre.

“As this is an ongoing police investigation, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further at this time,” Rowland said.

“Southlake continues to work with the police and thanks them for keeping our communities safe.”

CityNews contacted York Regional Police officers for comment on Monday, but a representative wasn’t immediately available.
