Foggy morning commute in GTA with ‘near-zero visibility’ in some parts

It was a foggy Thursday morning commute in Toronto as Environment Canada warned of “near-zero visibility” in some areas.

A fog advisory was in place for all regions of the GTA with the weather agency saying “areas of dense fog are expected to persist through the early morning hours.”

Conditions were expected to improve by the mid-morning. As of 7 a.m., the advisory was lifted for Toronto and Peel Region, and just before 9:30 a.m. for the rest of the GTA.

“Visibility may be significantly and suddenly reduced to near-zero,” Environment Canada’s advisory had warned. “If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead and be prepared to stop.”

The fog came amid a stretch of unusually mild weather for early January with typical daytime highs below the freezing mark for this time of year.

CityNews meteorologist Jill Taylor says Toronto can expect cloudy skies to persist on Thursday after the fog moves out. There is a slight chance of showers later in the day with a guaranteed high of 4 C.

The GTA has seen wet weather for the better part of two days with a special weather statement for freezing rain now lifted for northern and eastern parts of the region.

The Toronto and Region Conservation Authority issued a Water Safety Message on Tuesday that will remain in effect until Thursday, warning that soil conditions and rain could result in high water levels in streams this week.
